Duke Ellington - Meets Coleman Hawkins (LP Vinyl)
Product Details
Two titans who helped define what jazz could be, finally in the same room with tape rolling. By 1962, Hawkins had been playing the tenor saxophone longer than most musicians had been alive, and Ellington's orchestra had already logged decades at the Cotton Club and Carnegie Hall; the wonder isn't that this session happened, but that it took so long.
Even though Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins had both been well-known jazzmen since the early 1920s, it wasn't until 1962 - at least 20 years after Duke first suggested it - that these two recorded their only session together. High points include an exuberant "The Jeep Is Jumpin'," an interesting remake of "Mood Indigo," and a few new Ellington pieces. Verve Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes and remastered on 180-gram vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.
