After nearly two years away, the dual-drummer configuration was restored, the setlists were adventurous, and the band was clearly rediscovering what it could do on a live stage. The Landover date alone earns its place in the historical record as the final known performance of "Cosmic Charlie."

Dick's Picks Vol. 20 captures the Grateful Dead across two shows from September 1976 — Capital Centre, Landover, MD (9/25/76) and Onondaga County War Memorial, Syracuse, NY (9/28/76) — spread across four discs and over five hours of music.

The timing makes this volume especially significant. 1976 marked the Dead's return to the road after a 20-month hiatus, with Mickey Hart back in the fold for the first time in five years. The band sounds newly energized, weaving together fresh material like "Lazy Lightnin'" and "Supplication" with deep catalog rarities including "St. Stephen" and "Cosmic Charlie" — the latter appearing on the Landover setlist for the last time ever.

The Syracuse second set is the crown jewel: a breathtaking run through "Comes a Time" into "Eyes of the World" and into the out-of-nowhere "Orange Tango Jam" that stands among the finest moments in the entire Dick's Picks series.
