Jackie McLean spent the early '60s pushing hard bop toward something rawer and more searching, and his Blue Note run from that era stands as some of the most restless, committed alto saxophone work on record. With collaborators like Bobby Hutcherson and Tony Williams in his orbit during this period, McLean was operating in a creative circle that was actively rewriting the language of jazz.
Recorded in 1964 on the coat tails of some of McLean's best titles One Step Beyond and Destination.Out! The previous year, it fitted well with McLean's new trajectory, moving on from Bop towards more adventurous music.
