We can talk about how Young, himself, was coming off of the life-altering success of Harvest, in 1972, and struggling to know how to follow it, delaying the release of the original Tonight’s the Night by a full two years. We can talk about Young’s weirdly impeccable choice of Miami Beach as the spirit locale for the record, and the S.I.R. rehearsal space in Los Angeles in August of ’73 as the actual locale for the recording. We can talk about his band of bloodshot co-conspirators, including his Crazy Horse mates-Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina-and Tim Drummond, and Ben Keith, and Nils Lofgren, and Jack Nitzsche.

We can talk about how this 50th anniversary edition replaces the original “Lookout Joe” with a starker, darker alternate version, tracked at S.I.R. We can talk about the added side of bonus cuts- including “Raised on Robbery” with Joni Mitchell- on a second slab of vinyl. We can talk about the imperative mastering work of Chris Bellman drawing out every ghost on library-quiet black wax.

We can talk, evermore, about the record’s vampiric pall; seductively draining your blood to fuel the hearse parked outside the downtown bar, with Young behind the wheel-drunk or stoned or in mourning, and maybe all three-proposing you hop into that veiled Caddy, roll another number, and light out for Albuquerque.

We can just close the curtains, drop the needle, and ride. The players and the hustlers are all here. Because tonight’s the night.

No Comments comments associated with this post

— Larson Sutton, jambands.com

Product Details

Recorded in the raw, ragged sessions that Young himself said he wasn't sure should ever be released, this is the darkest corner of his catalog, and one of the most unguarded records rock has ever produced. Shelved for two years before Reprise finally put it out in 1975, it remains essential listening for anyone who wants to understand what Young meant when he talked about the ditch.

This album acted as a musical expression of grief for Young, who wrote and recorded it in 1973 after the deaths of two close friends who overdosed on heroin. His emotional tone and hoarse voice soar on Tonight's the Night; World on a String; Tired Eyes; Roll Another Number (for the Road); Speakin' Out; Borrowed Tune, and six more.

Tracklist

Disc 1

1.
