Polyrhythmics - Man From the Future (LP)
Seattle's Polyrhythmics emerged from the city's underground deep funk scene combining impossibly tight grooves with bold brass and hypnotic percussion that showcased elements of R&B, progressive jazz, and Afrobeat. Man From the Future marks their evolution toward what they call "psych-funk"—music that fills a room with an impending mood where anything could happen, sometimes evoking their brighter Fela influences but also taking sinister, darker turns toward a more progressive sonic palette. The eight-piece ensemble has spent over a decade developing the telepathic interplay that makes this record possible.
Founded in 2010 by Ben Bloom and Grant Schroff, Polyrhythmics gathered Seattle's most talented performers to create instrumental music that draws from the roots of American funk and soul while incorporating global influences. Their discography includes fan favorites like Octagon, Caldera, and Libra Stripes, but Man From the Future represents their most adventurous work—incorporating electronic and psychedelic elements while maintaining the groove foundation that makes audiences dance. They've earned their reputation at festivals from New Orleans Jazz Fest to High Sierra, proving instrumental funk can command attention without a single vocal. Color Red's vinyl release captures their cinematic approach in full fidelity.
