Parade arrived in 1986 as the soundtrack to Prince's film "Under the Cherry Moon," but it quickly outgrew that context to stand as one of his most sonically adventurous major-label statements. The album's horn arrangements, courtesy of Clare Fischer, pushed his studio palette somewhere far more cinematic than "Purple Rain" had gone, and "Kiss," stripped down to almost nothing, became one of the strangest number-one singles of the decade.
