Product Details

Marion Brown occupies a singular place in the free jazz lineage, having appeared on John Coltrane's landmark *Ascension* session in 1965 before carving out a deeply personal solo path that drew equally from African rhythms, European classical music, and Southern roots. *Vista* finds him in a reflective mode, a far cry from the torrential energy of his avant-garde work, and that contrast is precisely what makes it so compelling.

Saxophonist Marion Brown ended his '70s stint at Impulse! Records with this serene and colorful album. It features drummer Ed Blackwell and bassist Reggie Workman, with Stanley Cowell on acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes. Brown wrote the blissful "Vista," and the five other compositions are well-chosen, starting with an inviting version of Cowell's "Maimoun" and an impressionistic, deeply meditative take on Stevie Wonder's "Visions." Verve By Request Series features 180-gram vinyl, pressed at Third Man in Detroit.
