Phil Spector's Wall of Sound found some of its earliest and most iconic expression through the Crystals, whose hits like "Da Doo Ron Ron" and "He's a Rebel" became blueprints for the AM radio dominance that would define the decade. Their run of singles in 1962 and 1963 captured a particular moment when pop production was becoming its own art form, the studio itself an instrument.

One of the defining girl groups of the early 60s, the Crystals - whose members came from different sections of Brooklyn - were the link between the simpler doo-wop harmonies of the 50s and the sophisticated look and sound of pop divas like the Supremes. They are the group that are credited with first putting the Philles label on the pop map.
