Before Coltrane's landmark Atlantic and Impulse years cemented his legend, 1958 found him in a remarkably fertile transitional moment, still under contract with Prestige while moonlighting on sessions that captured his tenor and soprano voices in looser, exploratory settings. Wilbur Harden, the Detroit-born flugelhornist and trumpeter, brought a lyrical cool to these dates that draws out a warmer, more conversational side of Coltrane than the sheets-of-sound intensity he was simultaneously developing elsewhere.

In celebration of John Coltrane's centennial, this 3-disc box set includes all 3 albums recorded with Wilbur Harden in 1958 for Savoy Records: Mainstream 1958, Tanganyika Strut and Jazz Way Out. Featuring players including Tommy Flanagan, Curtis Fuller, Doug Watkins, Louis Hayes, Art Taylor and more. Remastered from the original tapes by Paul Blakemore and featuring new liner notes by Syd Schwartz.
