Xmal Deutschland – Peel: Complete Peel Sessions (CD)
Product Details
Hamburg's post-punk underground produced no shortage of compelling acts in the early 1980s, but Xmal Deutschland stood apart for the sheer intensity of Anja Huwe's vocals, which carried an almost ritualistic weight that translated powerfully to live radio. The Peel Sessions format suited them perfectly, capturing a rawness that studio albums sometimes smoothed over. These recordings document a band at the height of their powers, bridging two continents' worth of dark underground scenes.
German goth pioneers Xmal Deutschland - revered among British audiences in the early Eighties for their ominous and transfixing presentation of danceable darkwave, sung mostly in the German language - performed live for beloved DJ John Peel's BBC Radio 1 program four times over the span of 1982 to 1985. Emerging from Hamburg's art-punk underground and often associated with the Neue Deutsche Welle scene, the band quickly found a devoted UK following when they signed to 4AD and extensively toured alongside label mates Cocteau Twins, Clan of Xymox, and Dead Can Dance. The 16-song anthology, newly remastered at Abbey Road Studios (2026), includes fan favourites "Incubus Succubus," "Mondlicht," "Geheimnis," and "Qual". This release features new artwork by Timothy O'Donnel and band photography by Jörg Bohm.
