Dualtone was founded in Nashville in 2001 by Scott Robinson and Dan Herrington, two former Arista Records executives who wanted to build something smaller and more deliberate, a label focused on folk, Americana, and indie rock where artist development actually meant something. The early years involved acquiring a catalog from established artists to build the foundation, which is how they ended up in a living room in Hendersonville watching June Carter Cash play autoharp while Johnny Cash sat nearby. It was that kind of label from the start.

June Carter Cash's Wildwood Flower won the Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album. Guy Clark called this place home late in his career. The Lumineers' self-titled debut, released on Dualtone in 2012, sold over three million copies in the US alone and announced a generational shift in folk-influenced pop. Mt. Joy signed in 2017, and their breakthrough single Silver Lining hit number one on Adult Album Alternative. Gregory Alan Isakov. Amos Lee. The Lone Bellow. Kathleen Edwards. Shakey Graves. The label has also been the steward of Chuck Berry's catalog since 2014, which sits a little unexpectedly but also perfectly alongside everything else here.

What Dualtone has done consistently over more than twenty years is sign artists with real things to say and give them the time and resources to say them properly. The catalog reflects that patience, records that reward repeat listening and hold up long after the moment they were made.
