Released in 1992 on Sub Pop, Congregation arrived just as Afghan Whigs were outgrowing the label's Pacific Northwest identity, their Cincinnati soul obsessions pulling them somewhere rawer and more desperate than their peers. Greg Dulli's songwriting here cuts deep, all guilt and desire, pointing directly toward the darker confessions of Gentlemen a year later.
