Andrew Hill spent much of the 1960s pushing post-bop into genuinely unsettling harmonic territory, which makes Grass Roots a fascinating outlier, a session where his compositional voice opens up into something warmer and more groove-forward without losing any of its depth. Recorded during a period when Blue Note was navigating the cultural shifts of the late '60s, the album pairs Hill's idiosyncratic piano conception with a cast that could swing hard and think freely at the same time.

This stereo Blue Note Tone Poet Series edition was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI, and packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket.
