Product Details
Ann Peebles never got her full due outside of soul obsessive circles, but her voice ranks among the great Hi Records instruments, sitting alongside Al Green in the label's golden era. "Tellin' It" arrived in 1974, a year after "I Can't Stand the Rain" announced her to the world, and it captures a singer fully in command, not chasing a follow-up hit but deepening her craft with one of the tightest studio bands Memphis ever assembled.
Peebles was at the height of her career when she recorded Tellin' It — coming off her biggest hit, "I Can't Stand the Rain," the year before. Produced by Willie Mitchell at Royal Studios in Memphis, with the grooves that defined the label's sound, backed by Howard Grimes' drumming and the Memphis Horns.
"Peebles and Mitchell don't just recast "Rain" 10 different times—instead, they lean into the supple support laid down by the Hi Rhythm Section, who have plenty more uptempo grooves to offer." Andy Beta, Bandcamp
The original master tapes were sent to John Nicholson at Nashville Tape Transfer for their first listen in fifty years. From there, the project stayed close to home: remastered by Clay Jones in Taylor, MS, then back to Memphis for lacquers cuts by Jeff Powell (Take Out Vinyl), and was pressed & plated at Memphis Record Pressing.
