This one sits a bit outside the usual wheelhouse, but Jason Robert Brown's "The Last Five Years" has earned genuine crossover devotion since its 2001 off-Broadway debut, with its fractured, nonlinear structure making it as emotionally demanding for listeners as for its two-person cast. Ben Platt and Rachel Zegler are generational musical theater voices, and Brown's score rewards close, repeated listening the way the best singer-songwriter records do.
