Product Details
The Mermaid Avenue sessions began with a simple but profound premise: Nora Guthrie handed Billy Bragg a box of her father's unrecorded lyrics and asked him to bring them to life. What followed across Volumes I and II in the late '90s was one of the most celebrated folk collaborations in recent memory, pairing Bragg's political directness and Wilco's loose, exploratory Americana with words Woody left behind. Vol. III draws from that same well, making the case that the depth of Guthrie's unfinished work was practically bottomless.
First unveiled in 2012 as part of Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions, Vol. III collected 17 previously unreleased recordings from Billy Bragg and Wilco’s original Woody Guthrie sessions. Available here as a standalone 2-LP set on 180-gram vinyl, the 17-track album features “When the Roses Bloom Again,” “Listening to the Wind That Blows,” “The Jolly Banker” and more, showcasing the remarkable depth of the original sessions.
