Product Details

Richmond, Virginia-born Richard "Blue" Mitchell spent the early 1960s as a anchor of the Blue Note Records stable, recording as a sideman for Horace Silver before stepping out on his own as a leader. *Down With It*, cut in 1965, captures him at a crossroads moment, bridging hard bop fundamentals with the grittier, street-level soul jazz that was reshaping Black American music during the Civil Rights era.

Trumpeter Blue Mitchell's album wanted to let people know he was down with the times-but at his own pace. The ballader's signature soul jazz compositions include "March On Selma," and a rendition of blues classic "Hi-Heel Sneakers."
