Recorded in Nashville in early 1966 with a crew of seasoned session players who had never quite encountered anyone like Dylan, *Blonde on Blonde* captured a writer operating at a velocity that seemed unsustainable even as it was happening. The double album's sprawling, surrealist imagery and that famously "thin, wild mercury sound" set a bar that rock music has been measuring itself against ever since.
