Recorded during Dylan's 1978 world tour, the Budokan shows caught him in full bandleader mode, conducting a large ensemble through radical rearrangements of his catalog that baffled some purists at the time and fascinated everyone else. The tour that produced these performances marked one of his most ambitious live reinventions, years before the Never Ending Tour made constant transformation his standard operating procedure.
