Sheffield's Cabaret Voltaire arrived at *Code* in 1987 having shed members down to the core duo of Richard H. Kirk and Stephen Mallinder, and the album reflects that leaner, more machine-driven focus. Recorded during a period when electronic music was reshaping dance floors on both sides of the Atlantic, *Code* pushed the group deeper into funk-influenced industrialism and house music's emerging pulse, bridging underground club culture and experimental electronics in ways that still sound ahead of their time.
