Sacramento's CAKE had already built a devoted following on the strength of John McCrea's deadpan wit and the band's magpie approach to genre, but *Pressure Chief* arrived at a moment when the band was operating largely outside the mainstream on their own terms. Recorded at their own Garage Door Studio, it's a document of a band answering to nobody, blending Vince DiFiore's trumpet lines with spare, unhurried grooves that reward patient listeners.
