Product Details
Recorded in a single session in February 1959, the same watershed year that gave us *Kind of Blue* and *Time Out*, Mingus brought together an ensemble that included Jackie McLean and Booker Ervin to make something rawer and more visceral than either of those landmarks. Where much of late-50s jazz was reaching toward cool restraint, Mingus was digging deeper into church, field, and Delta, reconnecting the music to its roots with unmistakable urgency.
Rooted firmly in gospel, blues and the old time Dixieland jazz of New Orleans, this essential jazz album drops just in time to kick off Black History Month 2026. Newly repackaged as part of Rhino's premium audiophile line, Rhino Reserves, Charles Mingus' 'Blues and Roots' features audio cut from the original Mono tapes by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab and lacquers pressed locally on 180 gram premium-quality vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing's Southern California plant.
