Charlie Parker – Vol. 2: Bird On The Side (CD)
Product Details
Before Parker reshaped jazz on his own terms, he was absorbing everything around him, and these sides reveal just how much he was already ahead of the curve. The 1947 Carnegie Hall date with Dizzy Gillespie documented here captures bebop's two founding architects at the peak of their partnership, a moment when the music they'd been building together in Harlem clubs finally reached a concert hall audience.
Charlie Parker: Bird On The Side: Vol. 2: Original Recordings 1941-1947
Documenting the first half of a career that was far too brief, these 1941-47 selections find Charlie Parker work as a formidable sideman. With Jay McShann and His Orchestra, "Bird" plays old-school jazz on "Swingmatism," "Dexter Blues," and "Sepian Bounce," while he trades leads with guitarist Tiny Grimes on "Romance without Finance" and "Tiny's Bounce." Sitting in with Red Norvo's sextet on "Get Happy" and "Congo Blues," Parker is laid back and smooth, but gets to cut loose with his friend Dizzy Gillespie on "Salt Peanuts" and-from the famed Carnegie Hall concert-"A Night in Tunisia."
Charlie Parker, saxophone. Dizzy Gillespie, trumpet. Teddy Wilson & John Lewis, pianos. Tiny Grimes Quartet. Walter Brown & Jimmy Butts, vocals, & others
