Baker's cool, unhurried trumpet tone made him one of the most recognizable voices in 1950s West Coast jazz, a scene centered around the Pacific Jazz label where he recorded prolifically as both a sideman and leader. The instrumental reinterpretations here, with Perkins and Giuffre stepping into the melodic space Baker's vocals originally occupied, offer a rare chance to hear how deeply those arrangements could breathe without a single word sung.

Released in conjunction with photographer William Claxton's book of the same name, Young Chet features 5 tracks from the album Pretty/Groovy, taken from the classic Chet Baker Sings session (where Chet sang, his voice has been replaced by saxophonist Bill Perkins or clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre, presenting instrumental versions of Chet's famous standards); the last 7 selections come from the Chet Baker And Crew sessions with tenor man Phil Urso and pianist Bobby Timmons. All material on CD for the first time.
