Christian McBride was already one of the most in-demand bassists in jazz before this 2009 session, having worked alongside Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, and countless others. Kind of Brown finds him planting a flag for straight-ahead acoustic jazz at a moment when the format needed a champion, drawing on the hard bop lineage he absorbed coming up in Philadelphia.
Christian McBride has toured and recorded extensively with his jammy, electric, Weather Report-like band but felt the urge to return to his jazz roots, so he assembled Inside Straight an acoustic quintet featuring: Warren Wolf, Carl Allen, Eric Reed and Steve Wilson. Recorded in the famed Fantasy Studios.
