Before Kendrick Lamar soundtracked a generation's reckoning, before Prince owned Purple Rain, Curtis Mayfield set the template for what a Black artist could do with a Hollywood commission, turning a blaxploitation vehicle into a searing moral critique of the drug trade and systemic poverty. The music arrived not as accompaniment but as counterargument, with Mayfield's falsetto and wah-drenched guitar carrying more weight than anything on screen.
Curtis Mayfield was best known for writing and producing the soundtrack to the film Super Fly. Super Fly is one of the few films ever to have been out grossed by it's soundtrack.
