When *Brown Sugar* arrived in 1995, it felt like a corrective, a young Richmond, Virginia pianist and vocalist reminding anyone who'd forgotten what soul music could actually feel like. D'Angelo recorded much of the album himself, playing most of the instruments, and the intimacy shows. Prince, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye are all audible touchstones, but the voice threading through tracks like "Lady" and the title cut was unmistakably his own.
