The Serious Moonlight tour marked a pivotal and somewhat bittersweet turning point, the moment Bowie traded the art-damaged intensity of his Berlin trilogy for arenas full of fans who'd discovered him through MTV and mainstream radio. The band he assembled was formidable, anchored by guitarist Carlos Alomar, a Bowie collaborator stretching back to "Young Americans," and the results captured a performer at his commercial peak, even if longtime devotees sometimes mourned the sleeker, more polished presentation.

1983's 'Let's Dance' was one of David Bowie's most commercially successful albums and so needed a tour to match. Named 'Serious Moonlight', the tour sold much better than expected forcing Bowie into less intimate venues than planned. Perhaps this explains why it featured an uncharacteristic one costume change.
