Bay Area thrash ran deep in the mid-80s, but Death Angel stood apart even in that company, five cousins from Daly City who came up in the same fertile scene that produced Metallica, Exodus, and Testament. Ultra-Violence arrived in 1987 as one of the most technically demanding debuts the genre had produced, balancing sheer speed with an almost jazz-like rhythmic complexity that hinted at where the band would push things on later records.
That one of the greatest thrash albums of all time was recorded by a bunch of teenagers (or barely even that... drummer Andy Galeon was only 14 years old) still remains one of metal's great success stories. Metallica's Kirk Hammett produced the Kill as One demo for Death Angel, and that, along with a fearsome live reputation (the band played L.A. and NYC despite their tender ages) led to their signing with Enigma and recording The Ultra-Violence in a mere three days. That's how tight these kids were... listen to "Evil Priest" and "Final Death" and prepare to be awestruck by their precocity, velocity, and ferocity.
