Recorded when the band were teenagers barely out of Basildon, Essex, *Speak & Spell* captures a group still finding their footing in the early British synth-pop scene, with Vince Clarke handling songwriting duties before his departure to form Yazoo. What's remarkable in hindsight is how effortlessly melodic and forward-thinking it sounds, arriving in 1981 alongside peers like Soft Cell and the Human League yet carving out its own distinct, almost innocent energy.

Speak & Spell is a remarkable debut album that put Depeche Mode on the world stage. Propelled by the #11 UK single "New Life" and by the international hit "Just Can't Get Enough" the album positioned Depeche Mode as one of the most interesting of the emerging electronic music artists.
