Milo Aukerman and company occupy a strange, beloved corner of the punk universe, influencing everyone from Green Day to the Descendents-obsessed suburban kids who formed the backbone of '90s pop-punk. These early recordings capture the band before "Milo Goes to College" made them icons, when Bill Stevenson's drumming was already ferocious and the songwriting was zeroing in on the blend of melodic smarts and velocity that would define American punk for decades.
Compiled in 1985, Descendents' Bonus Fat combines the band's debut single with 1981's Fat EP, as well as the outtake "Global Probing". It chronicles the nascent years of one of punk's most vaunted bands during a phase of caffeine-fueled bursts of energy, mapping their transition from a breezy, surf-tinged brand of power pop to the more aggressive, hardcore sound found on the Fat EP. Originally released on the Minutemen's New Alliance Records, the tracks laid the groundwork for the landmark debut that would cement the band's legacy forever.
