Dollar Brand & Don Cherry & Carlos Ward – Third World-Underground (LP Vinyl)

Recorded in 1974, this session brings together three restless spirits whose work consistently defied jazz's borders: Dollar Brand (later Abdullah Ibrahim), the South African piano visionary carrying the weight and beauty of Cape Town township music; Don Cherry, the harmonic wanderer who had already reshaped the language of the trumpet alongside Ornette Coleman; and saxophonist Carlos Ward, a quieter but essential voice in the avant-garde. Their convergence here documents a moment when jazz was genuinely global, years before that word became a marketing category.
