Product Details
Mac Rebennack had been a fixture of the New Orleans session scene for years before he conjured Dr. John, the Night Tripper, into existence, drawing on Mardi Gras Indian chants, voodoo ceremony, and the deep bayou strangeness that no other city could produce. Recorded in Los Angeles by a community of New Orleans exiles, Gris-Gris arrived in 1968 like a transmission from another dimension, introducing a persona and a sound that had no real precedent in American music.
180 gram vinyl. Gris-Gris is the debut album by Dr. John. Produced by Harold Battiste, it was released on Atco Records in 1968. The musical style of Gris-Gris is a hybrid of New Orleans rhythm and blues and psychedelic rock.
