Before "Electric Avenue" became inescapable on American radio, Eddy Grant had already spent years building a reputation as one of the most independent-minded figures in Caribbean-influenced pop, running his own label and studio in Barbados and writing, producing, and recording entirely on his own terms. His blend of calypso, reggae, and funk gave early '80s radio something it didn't know it needed, and "Gimme Hope Jo'anna," his pointed rebuke of apartheid-era South Africa, showed he was never just chasing hits.

Eddy was popular in London long before he hit the U.S. pop charts three times in the mid-'80s; now, a recent remix of his signature smash has him in the spotlight once again!
