Recorded in his bedroom and bathroom in Portland, Oregon, Elliott Smith's 1995 self-titled debut introduced a songwriter of devastating intimacy, armed with little more than an acoustic guitar and a voice that could stop a room cold. Released on Kill Rock Stars while Smith was still playing with Heatmiser, the album revealed a confessional solo vision that would eventually reach millions, most famously through his Oscar-nominated performance of "Miss Misery" at the 1998 Academy Awards.
