Erroll Garner remains one of the great self-taught pianists in jazz history, a player who never learned to read music yet developed a style so singular and influential that peers from Oscar Peterson to Duke Ellington sang his praises. Best known for composing "Misty," he was a relentless live performer whose energy in the studio could match any stage, and the Latin rhythmic textures woven through this 1967 session reflect the restless curiosity that defined his later work.
This was Erroll Garner's first traditional studio album in five years and perhaps his most ambitious album ever as a composer. The selections were surely inspired by the new array of musicians assembled for the sessions, including percussionist José Mangual, who would go on to play with Garner for the rest of his career. The electric atmosphere captured on tape here is at times raucous and always palpably joyful.
