Released in 1969, the Gazette arrived at a moment when pop's biggest acts were wrestling with the cultural upheaval around them, and Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio rose to that challenge with one of the more unlikely pivots in Sixties pop history. Gaudio's production ambitions here rivaled anything coming out of the era's major studios, proving the Four Seasons were always more than their radio hits suggested.

The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette marked a wild, unexpected, utterly satisfying departure for Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. Inspired by and dropped in the wake of classic psych-pop vocal albums like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Pet Sounds, this is one of the most ambitious efforts from the famed Jersey Boys. Gone are the doo-wop and Motown inspired harmonies, the light pop about girls, and arrived was a complex, insightful album of social commentary.
