Gordon Lightfoot spent decades as one of Canada's most essential songwriters, his fingerpicked acoustic style and plainspoken poetry influencing everyone from Bob Dylan to countless folk revivalists. These recordings, made in the quiet of his own process before illness nearly took him, capture something rare: an artist working purely for himself, with no release date or commercial pressure on the horizon.
Lightfoot discovered a treasure trove of unreleased material while he was housecleaning last year. Two CDs of songs he recorded nearly two decades ago were tucked away in his office. The songs were created in late 2001 and early 2002 before he suffered a near-fatal abdominal aortic aneurysm later that year.
