Damon Albarn had already reshaped British rock with Blur when he and Tank Girl co-creator Jamie Hewlett dreamed up something that had no real precedent, a virtual band rooted in genuine musical adventurism. That debut brought together Del the Funky Homosapien, Miho Hatori, and Dan the Automator alongside Albarn's melodic instincts, colliding hip-hop, dub, and post-Britpop into something that still sounds like its own universe. This camouflage pressing makes the physical object as visually distinctive as the project itself.

The world of Gorillaz was established on 26 March 2001 with the release of an eponymous debut album from a band like no other, before or since. 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Russel Hobbs and guitar prodigy Noodle burst onto the global stage following a collision of mishaps, meetings and pure luck to blow up a pre-digital world with their colourful backstory and ground-breaking virtual ways.

The combined creative genius of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett set a new standard of what was possible, with dazzling visuals and a string of smash hits including ‘Clint Eastwood’, ’19-2000’ and ‘Tomorrow Comes Today’ that – to this day - feels like a glimpse into the future.
