Beth Ditto's voice was already a force of nature by the time Gossip recorded this album in Washington D.C. with Picciotto behind the boards, but *Standing in the Way of Control* was the record that turned the world's attention toward a trio that had been quietly tearing up small rooms since their Arkansas beginnings. The title track became an anthem at a particular political moment, finding its way onto dance floors and festival stages across Europe before American audiences fully caught up.

The first thing that strikes you is the rhythm. The Gossip have been making punks dance since they debuted five years ago, long before dance punk existed. Soulful and jagged, you can hear everything from Dischord to Motown. The vocals resonate with the confident of the lyrics, asking people to hold on just a little bit longer reassuring youth that their are others out there and spitting in the face of all who say otherwise. Their album was recorded by Guy Picciotto (Fugazi). This is the sound of a band destroying and surpassing all expectations placed on them.
