Product Details

Recorded at Wally Heider's studio in San Francisco with contributions from David Crosby and David Nelson among others, American Beauty captured the Dead at their most songcraft-focused, drawing heavily on the country and folk roots that Garcia, Hunter, and the band had been absorbing throughout that era. The harmonies here, anchored by Garcia, Bob Weir, and Phil Lesh singing together, defined a warmer, more intimate side of a band better known for marathon live improvisation.

The crown jewel of the Grateful Dead's studio output, American Beauty was recorded in the summer of 1970 — just months after Workingman's Dead — and the two albums together represent the peak of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter's songwriting partnership. Featuring "Friend of the Devil," "Sugar Magnolia," "Ripple," "Brokedown Palace," and "Truckin'," it remains the definitive entry point to the Grateful Dead's catalog.

This 2024 pressing is on 180-gram black vinyl, remastered from the original analog tapes, and housed in a deluxe tip-on gatefold jacket with an obi strip and printed liner note insert.
