Hancock's 1979 funk excursion found him leaning hard into the groove-based direction he'd been exploring since "Headhunters," trading acoustic sophistication for dancefloor-ready arrangements at a moment when jazz and funk were in genuine conversation. It's a side of Hancock that sometimes gets overshadowed by his fusion landmarks, but his command of pocket and feel here is unmistakable.
