Long before *Cracked Rear View* made them one of the best-selling debut acts of the '90s, Darius Rucker and company were a beloved fixture of the South Carolina bar scene, absorbing everything from classic rock to Americana to college radio staples. That eclectic DNA is what makes this covers collection feel so genuine, these aren't cash-in interpretations but a band showing their record crates, the same influences that shaped their songwriting from the beginning.

Scattered, Smothered and Covered showcases Hootie & the Blowfish's love for reinterpretation, with covers ranging from “I Hope That I Don’t Fall in Love with You” by Tom Waits and “Hey Hey What Can I Do” by Led Zeppelin to “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want” by The Smiths, and R.E.M.’s “Driver 8,” proving Hootie’s influences were as varied as their sound was accessible on this rarities and B-sides collection. Their excellent 54-40 cover of “I Go Blind” that appeared on the Friends soundtrack also makes an appearance on this collection. 2LP set with a Side D etching.
