The My Morning Jacket frontman stepped fully outside the band's framework here, delivering his 2013 solo debut as a genuinely self-contained artistic statement. Ward's 1929 wordless woodcut novel, a brooding Depression-era fable told entirely in images, gives the record an unusual conceptual spine, connecting James's psych-soul explorations to a much older American tradition of visionary storytelling.
Regions of Light and Sound of God was written, produced and all instruments performed by Jim James (with the exception of strings and percussion) in Louisville, KY. The music on the album is inspired by life and the novel in woodcuts `Gods' Man' by Lynd Ward.
