Jimmy Smith – Organ Grinder Swing (LP Vinyl)
Product Details
Before Jimmy Smith arrived on the scene in the mid-1950s, the Hammond B-3 was largely considered a church instrument. Smith essentially invented the jazz organ trio format, and records like this one show exactly why Blue Note and then Verve kept the studio time booked. Kenny Burrell and Grady Tate are as natural a rhythm section as Smith ever recorded with, and the stripped-down setting lets the groove breathe in ways the big band dates simply couldn't.
Released in mid-1965, Jimmy Smith took a break from the typical big band sessions he'd been doing for Verve with this pared-down trio date, enlisting Kenny Burrell (guitar) and Grady Tate (drums) to take on a selection of blues and jazz standards. From the title track to his own "Blues For J," Smith and this all-star group display complete mastery of, arguably, the most swinging of all jazz band configurations - the organ trio. Verve Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes and remastered 180-gram vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.
