Joe Pass – The Best Of: Pacific Jazz Years (CD)
Product Details
Before his celebrated solo recordings and the Virtuoso series made him a household name among jazz guitar devotees, Pass spent years in the shadows, battling addiction and rebuilding his life before Pacific Jazz gave him a platform. These early 1960s sessions capture a player still finding his commercial footing but already in possession of the fluid single-note lines and harmonic depth that would later define his legacy.
33-year-old Joe Pass was discovered by Pacific Jazz producer Dick Bock playing in the house band of the Synanon drug rehabilitation house. Soon after, he was at the label recording with a variety of leading artists including Bud Shank and the Jazz Crusader. This compilation (covering his first 2 years at the label) contains material with his own quartet, Gerald Wilson's Orchestra, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Les McCann and the Sounds of Synanon. Most of this swinging, thoughtful work is on CD for the first time.
