These 1958 Savoy sessions catch Coltrane in a pivotal transitional moment, just as he was completing his tenure with Miles Davis and preparing to launch his own quartet. Harden, a trumpeter who largely stepped away from music not long after these dates, left behind a surprisingly rich recorded legacy here, his fluid, warm tone a perfect complement to Coltrane's already restless, searching approach.

In celebration of John Coltrane's centennial, this 3-disc box set includes all 3 albums recorded with Wilbur Harden in 1958 for Savoy Records: Mainstream 1958, Tanganyika Strut and Jazz Way Out. Featuring players including Tommy Flanagan, Curtis Fuller, Doug Watkins, Louis Hayes, Art Taylor and more. Remastered from the original tapes by Paul Blakemore and featuring new liner notes by Syd Schwartz.
