The Rio-born guitarist arrived on this record with a rhythmic approach so singular that Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, and Gilberto Gil all recognized him as a defining voice of a new Brazilian sound. Where bossa nova had cooled the samba down, Ben turned the heat back up, threading electric swagger through everything he touched and proving that Brazilian popular music could absorb rock and soul without losing an ounce of its roots.

In 1969, Jorge Ben released his self-titled album amid the excitement of the cultural and musical Tropicália movement. Drawing from American soul music and using, for the time, state of the art audio effects, and blending traditional Brazilian rhythms into his international breakthrough album.
