Kamasi Washington came up through the same fertile Los Angeles scene that produced Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, where he contributed as a key collaborator and bandleader, helping reshape how a new generation hears the saxophone. That communal, cross-genre spirit runs deep in everything he does, and Fearless Movement finds him leaning further into rhythm and movement as a unifying language, bringing together voices from jazz, hip-hop, and funk in the tradition of artists who never believed those worlds were separate.
His 2015 album The Epic, as well as 2018's Heaven and Earth were received by critics and audiences as a reimagination of modern jazz showcasing Washington's larger-than-lift compositions full of celestial grandeur and his distinct blend of jazz, Latin, funk, classical, hip-hop and soul. Fearless Movement, however, offers something different: terrestrial rhythms and collaborations from rappers, musical icons and even Washington's own daughter.
