Klaus Nomi occupies a singular place in the downtown New York avant-garde scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s, a countertenor who fused Weimar cabaret, new wave, and operatic tradition into something that defied easy categorization. Simple Man, his second and final studio album, was released in 1982, the same year he died, making it a quietly devastating document of an artist at full creative power. The alien theatricality was always the point, but the vulnerability underneath it was just as real.
